Itimad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb (Baby Taj)

Itimad-ud-Daulah is the title which was given to Mirza Ghiyas Beg by emperor Jahangir. Beg was the father of Jahangir’s favorite wife Nur Jahan and he was the important member of AKbar’s court. Later on, he became Jahangir’s chief minister.

Nur Jahan became the wife of Jahangir in 1611 and she quickly overshadowed Jahangir’s other wives. She played an unprecedented role in court and its political life. When Jahangir was getting sick, Nur Jahan was the virtual ruler and Jahangir himslef acknowledged her abilities.

Nur Jahan was genuinly devoted to her parents adn constructed a tomb for them in Agra. This persian-style marble masuoleum is the best preserved architectural project of Nur Jahan which is known as the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah where Nur Jahan’s mother- Asmet Begum, her fater- Mirza Ghiyas Beg and other relatives were buried.

Nur Jahan spent a vast sum over its construction. The tomb was built by Persian workers and the whole process took six years as indicated by inscriptions. The tomb is situated on the bank of Yamuna River. It is a small two-storied yellow persian marble structure in the centre of Charbagh. It marks the first use of persian-style marble inlay in India and very likely an inspiration for the Taj Mahal. For this reason, The tomb is populary known as ‘Baby Taj’ among Agra’s rickshaw-wallahs. It is approached by road from the east through a red standstone gate.
